Samsung releases 60-second commercial spot ‘Dreams’ to promote Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear

Last month, Samsung released a short film called “Dreams”, which is based on a girl using her Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear to create a spectacle in front of closed toy shop. She uses My Magazine, Action Memo, and Smart Relay and the Eurythmics song, “Sweet Dreams” is featured. It’s a strange video, but not strange for Samsung if you know what I mean. Today, Samsung released a shorter 60-second version for TV. I am not going to say anything more about either of them. Just hit the break for both videos and let us know what you think of them.

Android 4.3 test firmware leaks for the Samsung Galaxy S 4

Talk of Android 4.3 for the Samsung Galaxy S 4 had been increasing in frequency lately. Just in the past week we have seen rumors suggesting the update would begin arriving in late-November and we saw an update schedule leak by way of a French carrier. Well, it looks like the latest has arrived in the form of an Android 4.3 test build for the Galaxy S 4.

Said test build has recently leaked and has arrived as version I9505XXUEMI8. As evidence of the version, this test build is intended for the GT-I9505, which is the unlocked European model. There is an option to download and install this build, but as always, you should use test builds with caution as there could be issues.

Android VPN Setup

Using a VPN to connect your smartphone to your home or work network can expand the usability of your phone and help you to be productive no matter where you are. The VPN client that's built into the latest versions of Android work fine for creating basic PPTP and L2TP based VPNs, and there are third-party clients available -- many of them free -- if you want more options and/or want to connect to an SSL-based VPN.

If you use a different phone platform, note that the iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian also support virtual private networking. The Nokia built-in VPN client requires Nokia's VPN policy servers. At this time, Windows Phone 7 does not include support for the common VPN protocols (PPTP, L2TP/IPsec). It only supports SSL VPN (SSTP) through a Unified Access Gateway (UAG) using Exchange (on site or hosted).

Download VLC for Android APK

The VideoLAN Project has pushed a beta version of VLC for Android to the Google Play Store. The beta brings most of the functionality of VLC for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X to Android in a native UI in the Android 4.0 Holo style. However, there are a few hitches.

The beta release published to the Google Play Store today is only compatible with ARM systems that use the ARMv7 architecture set and support the NEON instruction set. That means that there are several devices — mostly those released before the Samsung Galaxy S in late 2010 — that cannot run the current beta. The major exception here is the Nvidia Tegra platform. Nvidia’s Tegra 2 (which is a popular choice for many Android device makers) cannot run this beta because it lacks the NEON instruction set.

Many low end devices (as well as high end devices from 2009) use ARM chips that utilize ARM core designs that are referred to as the ARMv6 architecture family. The ARM11 family of chips utilized this architecture. When ARM Holdings created the new Cortex series of ARM cores, it developed a new ARM architecture called ARMv7. ARMv6 and ARMv7 are incompatible, as ARM made different design choices for the architectures.

The NEON instruction set is what ARM calls its SIMD instructions. SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) instructions are also referred to as vector math instructions, which provide hardware support for processing parallel data sets. These instructions are often used for vector manipulation, which is critical for dealing with multi-dimensional data such as 3D polygons for graphics. It is also used for fast encoding and decoding of audio and video data. It is equivalent to Intel’s SSE instructions.

Some of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S1 and all of its Snapdragon S2, S3, and S4 chips use ARMv7. All Cortex series cores, including Samsung Exynos and TI OMAP 3, 4, and 5 series use ARMv7. The NEON instruction set is supported in Samsung Exynos and TI OMAP 4 and 5 on all chips. It is also supported on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S2, S3, and S4 chips. Nvidia’s Tegra 2 is ARMv7, but there’s no NEON instruction support. The Tegra 3 adds NEON to the supported ARMv7 instruction set.

Within the next few days, a version of VLC that does not depend on NEON will become available on the Play Store, as well as a version for ARMv6 processors.

However, if you live in the United States or Canada, you will not be able to get the VLC beta from the Play Store. VLC is available globally through the Play Store except for North America. The VLC team explains that they do not have access to North America-specific Android devices to test the builds with. If you live in North America and wish to use VLC for Android, you can grab auto-built nightlies for your Android device from the VideoLAN nightly build server. If you live outside of North America, head to the Play Store to grab the beta. The VideoLAN nightly build server has builds for ARMv6, ARMv7 with NEON, and Tegra 2, so no one gets left out of the party.

Note that the beta is most definitely unfinished, and early testing has shown it is rather slow right now due to all the debugging options enabled. Not to mention that the UI is unfinished and will likely be drastically different in the final version. But if you are not worried about any of that, go ahead and try it out!

The runner-up - Samsung Galaxy S4

If ever there was a phone to beat, it was this one. Samsung took everything that was good in the Galaxy S3 and made it better in its successor, the Galaxy S4.

Well, maybe not quite everything. The plastic body remains a turn-off for many, and it's certainly not as chic as the aluminum HTC One. It's also lost a bit of the curve of the Galaxy S3. And while Samsung has managed to squeeze a 5-inch display into the same size as the slightly smaller Galaxy S3, the IPS or Super LCD displays on other phones perform better in sunlight and seems to better handle shifts in brightness. The TouchWiz user interface has been refined a bit, but it's still flat in places and doesn't match the sophistication of other UIs.

Samsung's camera, however, remains the best in the business, as far as everyday use is concerned. It's filled with features, and the camera app itself is a joy to use, having been adapted from the high-end Samsung Galaxy Camera. You might not use features like the animated gif creator every day, but they're fun to have, even if they're not all that innovative.

But what landed the Galaxy S4 as our No. 2 is the laggy user interface -- we've experienced delays and stutters on a number of versions of the phone -- as well as the anemic storage situation. Samsung's 16-gigabyte version of the GS4 only has about 9 gigabytes of storage available to the end user. And while Samsung likes to say you can add another 64 gigabytes with a microSD card, that's a different kind of storage. Good luck keeping your larger games and apps on there. The sin isn't so much that Samsung's using all that space for the hundreds of features on the phone -- and it's got some really good preloaded apps and settings. The sin is that in 2013, that sort of deceptive marking and, for many, a lack of larger storage options, is unacceptable.

Would we recommend someone buy the Galaxy S4, which is available on just about every carrier on Earth? Absolutely. It just might not be the first phone we suggest.

Download Undead Soccer APK

Zombies are cool, and soccer is cool (in the right context). In fact, kicking a super-powered soccer ball at zombies is probably one of the cooler concepts I've heard lately. Undead Soccer from Bulkypix is a casual title that's a little bit first-person shooter, and a little bit sports game. It's also a little bit greedy, but we'll get to that.

Undead Soccer basically involves flicking soccer balls at the approaching hoard of zombies in order to survive. You tilt the device from left to right to pan around and get the undead in your sights. You just fire away until the zombies eat your brain, then start over. The graphics are pretty nice, and there are a lot of power ups and zombie types. It's a game I could see paying a few bucks for... oh, if only it were that simple.

This game costs almost $2.60 in Google Play, which is a bit steep for a this kind of game – it's not really in line with other titles. This is forgivable, but I'm less gracious when it comes to the obscene number of in-app purchases on display here. Undead Soccer spams the IAPs like a free-to-play game. There are single-use abilities, currency packs, continues, and upgrades all available for you to spend more money on. None of this is tucked away in a hidden menu, either. The game actively tries to sell you items with pop ups. Oh, and there are ads. I can only conclude there was some kind of mistake and Undead Soccer was supposed to be free.

Download Bonds of the Skies APK

Kemco has released another retro style RPG onto Google Play this morning called Bonds of the Skies. While their last release was a trial run for the free-to-play business model, Bonds of the Skies goes back to the paid game model install. Like most of their previous released, Bonds of the Skies is a pretty big RPG title to work your way through.
Like most of the old school RPG titles Kemco puts out, Bonds of the Skies is about saving the world once again from the clutches of some evil, in this case it is a demon who has surface and has already set one town on fire and looks to do the same to others. You'll be hunting down this demon and any other nasty creatures that get in your way.
Players will be able to customize their character by setting the skills you want to use. You'll also be able to unleash special attacks once your Synchro Gauge reaches 100% during a battle. One thing that is new to Kemco RPGs is the daily lottery, where players will receive one ticket every 24 hours with the chance of winning either a gold, silver, bronze or normal prizes. It all depends on how many points you earn in that 24 hours.
While Bonds of the Skies is a paid game, Kemco has decided to add once again the optional IAPs found in their previous release to this one as well. However, you can play the entire game all the way through without spending a cent. Should you be interested in playing this game, you can download a copy of Bonds of the Skies off of Google Play for $2.99.

LG Lucid 2 rumored to launch April 4th via Verizon

Nearly a month ago, we told you that Verizon was expected to take the LG Optimus F5 and with a few changes here and there, turn it into the LG Lucid 2. Not too long after that, we passed along to you a leaked photo of the LG Lucid 2 with the information to expect an April launch of the device. Well, the calendar has flipped over to the fourth month of the year and the word is that the LG Lucid 2 will launch this Thursday, April 4th, from the nation's largest carrier.

A couple of leaked photos make it clear that Verizon has made at least one major change to the LG Optimus F5, and that is with the battery. Instead of the 2150mAh cell that is scheduled to accompany the phone, the LG Lucid 2 will offer up a 2460mAh Silicon Oxide battery that should improve talk time. In addition, the Power Saving Mode on the phone can automatically monitor the battery life and once it detects only 30% remaining, certain programs and apps will be turned off, like Wi-Fi, screen brightness, Bluetooth, GPS and Sync.

LG is shipping the phone with Android 4.1.2 installed out of the box, so you don't have to wait for your Jelly Bean update. No word yet on pricing, but we could see this come in for well under triple digits with a two-year contract.
